ROLANDO Cervantes has always wanted to be an engineer but his dream had to be put on hold. At the age of 14, he stopped school and took on odd jobs just to help his parents make ends meet. During the day, he worked a ta convenience store and babysat at night. He also worked at a carinderia as a waiter, cashier, and dishwasher. This is a common scenario in Manila where not every child has the opportunity to go to school. Most low income families just could not afford the rising expenses in education. “This is one social need that we, at SCG, are trying to address through the SCG Sharing the Dream scholarship program,” said Anukul Kbngrit, country director of SCG in thePhilippines. “Now on its sixth year; this scholarship program in partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) provides financial and material assistance to a total of 150 public school students in Batangas, Bulacan, and Taguig where our Philippine subsidiaries operate. “SCG’s local subsidiaries include Mariwasa Siam Ceramics, United Pulp and Paper Co., CPAC Monier, and SCG Trading. In addition to this assistance, SCG also provides a life skills workshop to help students become socially responsible individuals. The scholarship program looks for students who don’t only have good academic standing, but are also motivated to rise above challenges and remain steadfast in reaching for their dreams no matter how their living situation makes it seemingly impossible. Kbngrit explains that this programs tands out from the others as it is more character based rather than focusing only on the student’s academic standing. “SCG is all about sustainability for the future, and what better way to build the future than to invest in the youth. They are our future leaders, and great leaders are not necessarily honor roll students. More importantly, they should have a strong character and a sense to overcome problems that the society is faced with.

Businessman and sports patron Manuel V. Pangilinan yesterday led employees of the MVP Group of Companies, which he heads, in distributing relief goods to flood victims in Metro Manila and Cavite, as he called for more volunteers to join “Tulong Kapatid,” the group’s drive to help people in evacuation centers. “We have taken it upon ourselves to help the needy in times of disaster, a practice embedded in our cultureof responsibility among the group, “he stressed.” We started mobilizing our resources for the victims of typhoon ‘Maring’ yesterday, and we will continue with the distribution of relief goods as well as other donations for as long as our means allow us,” he said. Pangilinan, known for his initials, MVP, and who chairs the Board of Trustees of the Philippine Disaster Recovery Foundation (PDRF), visited victims in the Metro Manila cities of Mandaluyong, Taguig, and Paranaque, and the nearby province of Cavite, along with Michael Toledo, senior vice president for Corporate Affairs at Philex Mining Corp., and other officials of the MVP Group. Toledo, who is also head of the MVP Group of Companies’ Media Bureau, said this visit to the different evacuation centers was done after One Meralco Foundation Inc., the development arm of Manila Electric Co., prepared at least 3,000 bags of relief goods — basic food, water, hygiene kit — for deployment and the TV5 Alagang Kapatid Foundation sent two truckloads of goods to Cavite and Laguna respectively.
AS A general rule, consumers benefit when companies compete to provide better and cheaper services to the market.
