Zero Basura Olympics
The sustainable waste reduction efforts by cement manufacturer CEMEX Philippines at its APO Plant in Cebu did not go unnoticed by the Zero Basura Olympics for Business. CEMEX took home the ‘Grandmaster’ Award during the awarding ceremonies held recently at The Bay Leaf inIntramuros. In particular, CEMEX was recognized for its solid waste management program that essentially makes use of residuals as a fuel source for theplant’s coprocessing unit, enabling wastes to be processed as fly ash. The Zero Basura Olympics recognizes companies that practice and promote waste management. The goal is for industries to revisit the way they do business as well as to urge them to set standards that can be replicated. It is organized by the Philippine Business for Social Progress, Earth Day Network, Pollution Contro lAssociation of the Philippines and Philippine Business for the Environment, in cooperation with the Environmental Management Bureau of the Departmentof the Environment and Natural Resources.
