8th Olango challenge slated May 23

CEBU, Philippines – Veterans and new-comers are expected to see action in the eight edition of the Olango Challenge, the country’s premiere open water swimming competition on May 23 at the Pacific Cebu Resort in Lapu-Lapu City.

Same as the previous edition, the swimming event hopes to build more classrooms for the children of Olango Island.  Since the event’s inception in 2007, the organizing Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSA) along with the Philippine Swimming, Inc. has helped Olango children through building calamity-proof and conducive classrooms.

Another event is also taking place on the same date as the country’s first open water competition, but organizers are pushing through its staging on the said date as there are now more than 50 swimmers that have registered for the event.

The Olango Challenge is sanctioned by PhilSwimming, the country’s governing body in swimming under Mark Joseph.

The eight edition features a 6K and 2K distance for both the competitive and fun swimmers.

This will be the first time that the event will start and end at the Pacific Cebu Resort since the second edition only had its start at the said resort and ended at the Tambuli Resort.

Another challenge course design awaits the swimmers as there will be six turning points to be dealt with.

Registration fee is pegged at P1,000 for the competitive side while the fun swimmers is pegged at P2,500 regardless of its distance to swim.

Deadline is set on May 15 while swimmers who chance their category or distance will have to pay a penalty of P500.This is to avoid delay and confusing of the results.— Caecent No-ot Magsumbol
