PH waste problem: ‘It’s behavioral’

zbo generic backdrop

It is an obvious reality that the Philippine’s waste nightmare is caused by a behavioral problem most of us have.

This concept of Filipinos not being disciplined enough with their own garbage was emphasized by Earth Day Network Philippines President Bert Guevarra during the launch of Zero Basura Olympics (ZBO) for Business 2012 last April 25.

“It’s behavioral,” Guevarra said, pertaining to why there are still a lot of problems on waste management.

During the ZBO for Business launch, there was call for support among the media, private sector, and schools to intensify awareness on the proper application of the 3Rs (Reuse, Reduce, Recyle) in the workplace, schools, and homes.

“Make composting a way of life,” said Bebet Gozun, presidential adviser on Climate Change and former DENR secretary.

She and the other advocates for the environment are in one line of thought on matters regarding effective waste management. They underscored that segregation is already a knowledge but what the people need to know is how to convert this knowledge into a habit.

A good intention and a good idea are not going to be enough, as per the organizers of ZBO for Business 2012. It is constant communication and sharing of best business pratices that will define the success of this multi-sectoral endeavor.

ZBO for Business is an annual competition for industrial, commercial, or corporate companies that practice innovative solid waste management in their operations. It is a recognition to organizations whose best waste-reducing  practices can also be replicated by other institutions.

It was conceptualized to fast track the implementation of RA 9003, also known as Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

A participating company may submit their entries under these categories: (1) source reduction or minimization of waste before entering the waste stream, (2) composting or organic waste conversion, (3) reuse or recycling, (4) residual waste management, and (5) segregation.

However, it is a requirement that the company must not have a current violation of RA 9003. This act is the most comprehensive law in addressing the country’s garbage problem.

ZBO is organized by the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) and Earth Day Network Philippines, Inc. in partnership with Pollution Control Association of the Philippines, Inc.; Philippine Business for the Environment; Ayala Foundation, Inc.; National Solid Waste Management Commission; and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
