Sagittarius Mines, Inc. (SMI) granted financial support to some 14,332 students from elementary to college and paid for the monthly salaries of 18 teachers in Tampakan, Tupi, Columbio and Malungon during the time that the local governments were seeking the regularization of their pay. A total of 608 farmers and tribal members were trained in farming technologies to support their banana, corn and potato production. Medical missions were conducted for the members of 3,011 households within SMI’s project sites and exploration areas. More than 1,500 volunteers and 80 government and community organizations planted about 130,000 seedlings under the company’s reforestation program. Other environmental initiatives were field trial research to preserve local biodiversity, the propagation of endemic species, and butterfly culture.
