Businesses launch Manila Declaration to back govt’s climate change agenda

MANILA — The country’s business community has launched the 2015 Manila Declaration to support the Philippine government’s agenda on climate change.
Among the largest business groups in the country, Philippine Business for Social Progress, Philippine Business Environment, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Management Association of the Philippines, Makati Business Club, Federation of Philippine Industries, and Financial Executives of the Philippines, signed the Manila Declaration on Friday at the Intercontinental Hotel in Makati City.
The Declaration is also a response of the private sector to the government’s Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) which is the county’s comprehensive climate change agenda to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in December in Paris, France.
●Developing and implementing mitigation strategy in business operations and value chain;
●Recognizing climate change risks and provide solutions to be more carbon-efficient;
●Developing solutions to help increase resiliency of communities; and,
●Embedding sustainability into business and innovative products and services
It was noted that global cumulative emissions are fast increasing, now at 582 billion tons.
It was also projected that if warming continues to increase beyond two degrees celcius, consequences will be disastrous.
To avoid such future, global emissions should not exceed one trillion tons.
