Almost a year after Typhoon Yolanda swept areas in the Visayas region, Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) continues to revitalize coastal communities and uplift the lives of fishermen by planting mangroves. With help from online crowd-funding platform GlobalGiving, PBSP was able to bring this mission not only to corporate donors but the general public.
Through GlobalGiving, PBSP was able to raise Php2.9 million for the ongoing rehabilitation of 34.6 hectares of mangrove areas in barangays Kaongkod and Malbago in Madridejos, Bantayan Island, Cebu, which lost 27% of its mangrove biomass due to the storm.
During the mangrove reforestation activity, GlobalGiving Director of Programs Britt Lake and Senior Unmarketing Manager Alison Carlman visited barangay Kaongkod, Madridejos and planted 5,000 propagules with officers and members of the Kangwayan Farmers Association.
The mangrove reforestation project is part of PBSP’s Project New Dawn, the foundation’s collective response to the long-term rehabilitation needs of the Visayas region after Typhoon Yolanda.
