Insurance Employees step up to help a school

Employees of Ace Insurance of the Philippines work together to cover donated books for the students of Ususan Elementary School.

The Brigada Eskwela campaign of the Department of Education, in collaboration with the private sector, has already ended after school opening in June, but Insurance Company of North America (Ace Philippine Branch) continues to implement it as part of their CSR initiatives.

Their employees trooped to Ususan Elementary School and rolled up their sleeves to volunteer last October 17, 2014. They had four goals for the day: Cover the textbooks, build bookshelves, set up reading corners and paint the school’s safety grills.

The project, which is in partnership with Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), is about making schools more conducive to learning.

“I think it’s very important for employees to help because these students will someday become adults and hopefully business owners and successful entrepreneurs, and they will always look at Ace as a company that is not just interested in doing business with them but as one that actually cares to help the community,” Ace Insurance of the Philippines President Daniel Daly said.

Daly added that this kind of activity is inherent in the culture of Ace Insurance of the Philippines to help the community whenever it can.

“We do this all over the world, and it’s not just one day. It’s whenever we think we can make a difference,” he said.

A total of 400 books were covered and several bookshelves were built for the two reading corners for the school.

Josefina Granada, principal of Ususan Elementary School, is grateful for the help of Ace Insurance employees and PBSP.

“I’m planning to set it up (reading corners) in our library so it will be centralized and all the pupils can read from it. We are very thankful to PBSP because lots of blessings are coming in through their effort,” she said.
