A journey of dreams

Preparing young students for the future by unlocking their full potential

One of the most valuable lessons that can be passed on to a person is to provide him with the courage to pursue his dreams. Although no amount of preparation will ever be enough to help someone get ready for future challenges, one can start by assessing his strengths and weaknesses.

To supplement this goal of helping students move forward, workshops like Petron’s Best U Can Be (BUCB) project are conducted for the high school scholars of the Tulong Aral ng Petron send-a-child to school program.

In partnership with Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), Petron recently conducted another BUCB leadership and life skills development activity at the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

With the theme “Star Struck (Dream, Believe, Thrive), the session sought to equip fourth year (Grade 10) Tulong Aral scholars with options and opportunities they could explore after high school, guided with the values of pagmamahal sa katotohanan (love for truth), paggalang (respect), pananampalataya sa Panginoon (faith in God), and pagmamahal sa kawang-gawa (love for charity).

The ates and kuyas (older sisters and brothers) from The Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP) served as mentors and role models to the young participants and led exciting activities with equally amusing titles like Dreamy, Dream Me; Dream Up; StarTalks!; and Believing You, Believe in U. Each of the activities was designed to help the students assess their current situation and start preparing them for their future by teaching them to weigh their options while considering their personal passions.

Before the day ended, some of the facilitators left some messages and questions for the students to ponder on.

Don’t be afraid to proclaim your dream,” said Ate Cherry, a flight attendant.

Ate Gelle, an engineer for a cruise ship asked also made the students think hard with her question, “Bakit kailangan kilala natin ang sarili natin at bakit kailangan malaman ang gusto natin para sa pangarap natin?(Why do we need to know ourselves and why do we need to know our dreams?)

One of the students, Elizabeth, gave the most striking answer, “Kasi sa future tayo din ang bubuo ng dreams natin.” (Because in the future, we will be the ones to pursue our dreams).

The BUCB is conducted annually and is designed uniquely for every level as part of the Tulong Aral Program activities. Now on its 7th year, PBSP has been implementing the Program for Petron Foundation and currently has 449 scholars from 22 schools in Metro Manila.
