PBSP awarded grant under the Grand Challenges Canada (GCC)

Grand Challenges Canada (GCC), funded by the Government of Canada, announced last May 22, 2014 the investments of $12 million in projects worldwide aimed squarely at improving the health and saving the lives of mothers, newborns and children in developing countries.

Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) is one of the recipients of these social investments.

PBSP submitted a proposal called Brokering for the Poor, a low cost “safe motherhood insurance program,” being started in the Philippines to overcome financial barriers that often delay poor women from getting appropriate care in labour. Working with insurance companies, the project represents a novel potential business model to further reduce the rate of maternal mortality worldwide.

As part of PBSP’s commitment to improving the state of healthcare in the country, we will try out a new program that will hopefully help provide health insurance to young mothers in depressed communities.
